EV Drivers Support Paying a Fair Tax
Drive Electric Dayton and the Electric Vehicle Association are in favor of Electric Vehicle (EV) owners paying local and federal fuel taxes as long as it fixes the flaws that exist in the motor fuel tax that has not been increased since 1993.
The truth is EV drivers throughout the country pay more in taxes. As an example, Ohio EV drivers pay an annual $200 EV tax in addition to the regular registration fee; plug-in hybrid drivers pay $150. However, the driver of an average-efficiency, gas-powered car (getting 20-30 miles per gallon) pays gas taxes of about $160 per year. EV drivers in Ohio are paying approximately 25% 1more than their counterparts.
One Big Beautiful Bill proposes a federal EV registration fee charging Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) drivers an additional $250 annually and plug-in hybrid drivers $150. This disincentivizes BEV purchases and impacts states with existing EV registration fees.
EV drivers pay 3x more taxes and fees in 32 states than internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts. That’s not fair and it doesn’t solve nation’s need for more funding to build and maintain the states’ roads and bridges. These actions are weakening the fight against global warming causing job loss across the country and creating conditions that will make it difficult for citizens in underserved communities, both rural and urban, to afford EV ownership.
Drive Electric Dayton and the Electric Vehicle Association ask our representatives in Washington to oppose the EV increases proposed in the Big Beautiful Bill and adopt a formula that would be fair to all and raise funds to sufficiently build and maintain the nation’s transportation infrastructure.
